Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer moved Monday to take up a bipartisan tax package that includes an expansion of the Child Tax Credit and key business provisions, including some favored by energy companies.

The chamber will take its first procedural vote on the legislation, H.R. 7024, later this week. Given Republican opposition to the bill in the Senate, it is likely to be a symbolic vote designed to put GOP members on the spot.

The tax bill, which was negotiated by Finance Chair Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and House Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.), passed the House in January.

It has been stuck ever since over the objections of Senate Republicans, who have voiced various complaints about the retroactivity of the business provisions and the structure of the CTC.
