California looks to extend carbon market 5 years ahead of end date

The state’s cap-and-trade program is authorized to 2030. State legislators will try in 2025 to reauthorize it beyond the expiration date.

The last time California extended its landmark carbon cap-and-trade program, it took months of arm-twisting by then-Gov. Jerry Brown.

The program is authorized through 2030, but California lawmakers plan to start working soon on an extension to avoid the turmoil of 2017.

The state Senate will pursue program reauthorization next year, state Senate President Pro Tempore Sen. Mike McGuire (D) said last week.

It’s needed, officials and observers said, to give regulated businesses more confidence to make long-term plans.
