The so-called ARCH2 hub was awarded an initial $30 million of up to $925 million in federal funds for the first tranche of funding in order to conduct planning, analysis and design for the project.

The Energy Department announced Wednesday it awarded an initial tranche of funding to the regional hydrogen hub spanning West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania, the latest hub to receive funding as part of the effort to help create a national clean hydrogen network.

The announcement marks the third regional hub to access an initial pot of money from the bipartisan infrastructure law program, following the Pacific Northwest and the California hydrogen hubs.

Details: The Appalachian regional hub — led by Battelle — reached a cooperative agreement with DOE to receive up to $925 million in federal funds. The hub was awarded an initial $30 million Wednesday for the first tranche of funding in order to conduct planning, analysis and design for the project.

The so-called ARCH2 hub is planning to develop multiple hydrogen fueling stations and permanent carbon dioxide storage throughout Appalachia. The proposed 11 production sites include hydrogen produced through electrolysis, from anaerobically digested food waste and from natural gas with carbon capture.
